Northern Perspectives on the Sustainable Development Goals
The Northern Council for Global Cooperation (NCGC) is delighted to present Northern Perspectives on the Sustainable Developments Goals photography collection.
In 2015, 193 countries, including Canada, adopted the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at ending extreme poverty, reducing inequality, and combating climate change. These goals have a universal mandate, and Canadians, including young Canadians, have a responsibility to support the achievement of the SDGs within Canada and abroad.
NCGC asked northern photographers to characterize each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through imagery and narration. Using the SDGs as a framework and common language, the photographers profiled initiatives in their communities — from civil society, government, business, community organizations and youth — that show some of the ways that Northern Canadians are working together to achieve a more sustainable and just planet. Each photographer worked with their community to determine how best to represent these goals from their own unique perspective. The result is this powerful collection of images and narration directly from communities in Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
The Northern Council for Global Cooperation’s (NCGC) vision is a just, equitable and sustainable world. We are a non-profit organization made up of a network of individuals and organizations based in Canada’s three northern territories who are committed to achieving sustainable global development for people and the planet. NCGC takes a leadership role in providing educational opportunities and the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to become active global citizens. We seek to inspire northern Canadians by connecting people and organizations to the information and ideas they require, to take meaningful action and create a better world for all citizens.
Thank you to all of our volunteers, supporters, partners and board members for your valuable contributions to the Northern Council for Global Cooperation. Without your help, we would not have the ability to successfully engage thousands of Northerners in sustainable development and global citizenship work. We hope this collection of images and narration inspires you to seek and action your own initiatives for a more just and sustainable world.
